Classical Stories: Bach

Students are introduced to Johann Sebastian Bach’s music through short deep listening exercises and optional integrated language arts activity. Students identify and annotate tempos, dynamics, timbre and imagery used in and associated with the compositions.

Adventures in Treble Clef

Through reading the story Freddy the Frog and the Thump in the Night by Sharon Burch, students will discover how to read music notes in the treble clef and then will learn to perform simple songs on xylophones.

Exploring the Night Sky with Van Gogh and Mozart

Throughout history, the night sky has been the object of much speculation, investigation and imagination by scientists and mathematicians, as well as the subject for creations and compositions by musicians and visual artists.  Mozart’s (12) “Variations on ‘Ah Vous Dirai-je Maman” and “The Starry Night” by Vincent Van Gogh will stimulate students’ interest in the art of the evening sky.

War of 1812

Students deepen their understanding of the political and emotional events of the War of 1812 through the music of Tchaikovsky.  Students will learn how different instruments are used for expressing a mood and illustrating events in history.  Students will write a response to the music that informs about their own understanding of both the instrumentation and the important events of history.

Beethoven's Sixth Symphony: Pastoral

Students discover how music can create a visual image in one’s mind as they listen to Beethoven’s Sixth Symphony – Pastoral.  As the image takes shape, the students create a visual representation of their image to include the aspects of nature which Beethoven included in this wonderful composition.

Guess What's on My Mind?

Copland and Ellington
