Connects Music to Art

Matic Beethoven’s Thoughts
Students will write a descriptive essay explaining how they feel, and what thoughts they have while listening to Beethoven’s 5th. They will also describe the musical elements that cause them to feel that way. They will then transpose those feelings into a watercolor art piece, orally present their essay and later act out their verbs in a physical education exercise.

By studying the creative process that musicians and artists use, students will discuss racism and create their own class project quilt to express racial harmony.

While developing their listening, critical thinking, and cartooning skills, students will understand that music creates/evokes a mood, emotion, and/or feeling that can be expressed through cartooning.

Exploring the common elements between the language of music and that of literature. Students will hear the way musical techniques shape music and transfer this understanding to literary techniques.

Perez Soundtracks
Students will develop their reading and writing skills while listening critically to classical music in order to illustrate a chapter of their literature book (Island of the Blue Dolphins) and choose music to enhance their illustration. These chapters will then be incorporated into a class movie project.

Through creating and performing on their own ceramic instrument, students will be able to identify the characteristics which classify each instrument into a particular family and learn basic music vocabulary and distinguishing instrument sounds.

Nicolson Why Renaissance?
Students will identify what a Renaissance is by determining what elements are necessary for a Renaissance to occur in a society, and summarizing how a Renaissance affects creativity within a society. They will also compare and contrast the artworks and music from the Renaissance of the Middle Ages and the Harlem Renaissance and identify aspects of various contemporary collage artists.
