Students will engage with the music of Igor Stravinsky and write a cinquain poem to express their interpretation. Students will use different art mediums to draw their vision of his music.

Elephants in Tutus

Students will understand how three famous people made a significant contribution to the performing arts. They will read a timeline, demonstrate map skills, learn and perform a simple rhythmic pattern using various percussion instruments. Using adjectives and verbs, students will describe the animal that they have selected for their ballet performance. They will listen to an historical account of the event as well as listen and dance like elephants to Stravinsky’s Circus Polka: For a Young Elephant.

Compare and Contrast Composers

Students will create a visual representation of what they think about, or feel from the music of Copland and Stravinsky. After reading books from the series Getting to Know the World's Greatest Composers, students will use a Venn diagram to compare and contrast the two composers (Stravinsky and Copland), their music, and the time period in which they lived to create a paragraph comparing the two composers.

Moods

Students will determine moods created by a piece of music and will analyze how the composer created the feelings. Students will determine the character traits/moods of story characters by analyzing the adjectives, adverbs, and verbs used by the author. Finally, students will determine which piece of music best represents the characters from a story.

Syncopation with Stravinsky's Rite of Spring

Music and the Elements of a Story

Students will identify the character, setting, and plot of the story of Ballet of the Elephants and listen to Circus Polka: For a Young Elephant, composed by Igor Stravinsky for the ballet. Students will then listen to a piece of unidentified music to create their own character, setting, and plot diagram. They will use this diagram to create their own story that includes characters, a setting, and a plot (beginning, middle, and end).

Greek God of Music, Apollo, in Classical Music

In this lesson, students will learn about the ancient Greek god of music, Apollo, through two pieces of classical music. The students will discuss the role of music in ancient Greece. The students will analyze two musical compositions, Apollo by Igor Stravinsky and Apollo et Hyachinthus by Wolfgang A. Mozart.

The Rite of Spring and Fantasia

Students will listen to Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring, discuss what spring time means, and create a list of adjectives for the music. Then, they will watch the part of the Disney film Fantasia that re-interprets the same music. Students will add to their list of adjectives, retell the film's story, and compare the original music to the film's story. After listening again, and moving to the music, they will write and draw a response.

Stravinsky, Munch, Vivaldi, Monet and Albers

Compare and contrast Stravinsky's Rite of Spring to Vivaldi's Four Seasons, La Primavera (Spring). Pair the music of Stravinsky with the art of Edvard Munch. Pair the music of Vivaldi with the art of Claude Monet. Discuss the similarities and differences. Discuss Josef Albers’ Homage to the Square entitled “The High Spring”. Discuss how color and mood are connected. Create a color square in the style of Josef Albers to represent the pairings of Stravinsky & Munch and the pairing of Vivaldi & Monet.
